Brief

Aim:
To develop an understanding of the principles and processes involved in using illustration practice within production design for concept design for entertainment properties.

Project Brief:
In this project, students are asked to create concept design for a new Dark Crystal film which communicates an innovative and contemporary perspective of the world of the Dark Crystal. Students will work independently to develop either a Character or Environment design and one Prop, for their chosen section of the narrative.
The design development will also be informed by an aesthetic treatment, or artistic movement which will be given out in class. The design development will employ an iterative process of thumbnail sketches, illustrative roughs, colour studies, detail drawings, technical drawings, maquettes and models to convey concept. The concept will then be developed to a finalised quality; as a presentation piece. This will be accompanied by a selection of design development from your workbook, sumarised in a 6 page PDF document. Students will also need to submit an annotated blog or physical workbook.

"Concept design begins with concept art, which is a speculative and overarching response to the proposed world. Once a design direction has been established concept art is evolved into concept design which is a more resolved and tangible response to the world. Concept design needs to explore the physical, societal, and emotional conditions of the world. It also needs to consider usability, function, visual accuracy and methods of making through detailed drawings and models; as these designs need to be able to be fabricated either physically or digitally for use within the film."
